Free to Clutha residents in years 8-13, Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit (CACTUS) empowers young people to reach their full potential. A project of the Clutha District Youth Council, CACTUS fosters fitness, self-esteem, and confidence in a nurturing team atmosphere.
Strengthening the ties between participants and their community is a key part of the programme. Each training session concludes with a group breakfast, allowing participants and trainers to share a meal together. Community leaders speak to the group, covering a range of topics including mental health, motivation, and future job opportunities. By showcasing local role models, CACTUS inspires young people to envision a bright future and equips them with the tools to achieve it. This holistic approach ensures that participants leave the program not only with improved physical fitness but also with a well-rounded perspective on life.
"Whether it's pushing through physical fitness challenges, trying something new for the first time or supporting each other through it, CACTUS builds strong, confident young people."
The program ends with The Longest Day, where participants work as a team to put their new training to the test. The Longest Day culminates with a celebratory graduation ceremony.
“Participants develop an incredible sense of teamwork and resilience through the programme," says Lilly Patterson, Council Community Support and Development Adviser. "Whether it's pushing through physical fitness challenges, trying something new for the first time, or supporting each other through it, CACTUS builds strong, confident young people who leave with a greater belief in themselves and their abilities. The transformation from day one to The Longest Day is inspiring.”
Recognising the importance of supporting the district’s youth, Clutha Foundation is pleased to support CACTUS by covering essential costs for this vital youth programme.
Lilly adds that support from Clutha Foundation helps "keep the programme free and accessible for our youth by removing financial barriers. The Youth Council is thrilled to receive funding from Clutha Foundation for the CACTUS programme. This support means we can keep providing young people with the opportunity to build resilience, teamwork and personal growth."
By investing in the youth of the Clutha District, Clutha Foundation is not only helping young individuals develop crucial life skills but also fostering a stronger, more resilient community. This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when community resources are pooled together for the greater good.
